Hartlepool is your nearest town, about fifteen minutes down the coast, and it has a lot more to it than people expect.

HMS Trincomalee and the Royal Navy museum

The highlight is the National Museum of the Royal Navy, at the west end of the marina. At its heart is HMS Trincomalee, a frigate built in Bombay in 1817 and the oldest British warship still afloat. You can go aboard and explore her decks, then wander the recreated Georgian seaport around her, with its shops, workshops and quayside. It is a genuinely good day out, for children and grown ups alike.

The marina

Next door, the marina is where Hartlepool goes to eat. There are restaurants, cafes and bars around the water, and it is a pleasant place for a walk before dinner, with the boats coming and going.

Seaton Carew

A little further south, Seaton Carew is Hartlepool’s seaside, with a long promenade, a wide sandy beach and the traditional fish and chips you would hope for. It is also where most of the little terns on this coast now nest each summer, behind fencing on the beach in front of the promenade.

Everyday things

Hartlepool is where you will do the big food shop, catch a train, and find the bits and pieces every home needs. The railway station has trains along the coast to Sunderland and Newcastle, and south to Middlesbrough.

Owning a home nearby
