The setting

Where the dene meets the sea.

Castle Eden Dene runs down through the woods to the beach right beside the park, and the cliffs of the Durham Heritage Coast stretch away north and south.

This stretch of coast spent most of the last century black with colliery waste. It has been cleaned up so thoroughly that it is now a protected Heritage Coast, with sandy beaches, limestone caves and wildflower grassland on the cliff tops.

Step out of the gate and you can walk the beach, the coast path or the dene. Get in the car and Hartlepool, Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle are all within an easy drive, with the A19 a few minutes away.
